It's been a productive three months in Pokhara and has been supported not only by our regular volunteers but also teams of under 18 and Service Learning groups. We have worked around the monsoon weather conditions to continue our work in improving educational facilities. A government school in the village of Pame benefitted from being repaired and repainted. The children were particularly appreciative of their playground equipment being repaired. We also supported improvements to the hostel at a boarding school in the Tibetan area and a Government school close by to the hostel. We were also very active in making furniture for Montessori schools such as cupboards and benches. At the Boys Home we have continued to support their daily meals and snacks through the GVI Trust. The programme we provide at the Boys Home continues to have a focus on challenging thinking and developing creativity. Among their favourite activities recently has been science tasks where the Boys developed simple electronic circuits, creative drawing is also a task they enjoy.
At the childcare centre we have continued to provide daily support for the healthy routines such as handwashing and toothbrushing. Through songs, rhymes and stories in particular the childrens English continues to develop steadily. Our local Nepali coordinator works with our volunteers to ensure the programme suits the developmental needs of the children and has just the right balance of skill development.
Our Conversation Club with local children in the Lakeside area continues to thrive and with an emphasis on creativity and problem solving the children show some good skill development. Sports and games sessions are a big favourite too. In two schools we continued to work on the WASH programme. At this stage the emphasis is on handwashing, tooth brushing and general hygiene. The monsoon made it timely for lessons on how heavy rains can affect the water supply, there were some great lessons on comparing water from different access points.
Our Women's Empowerment programme continues to support the local women in a variety of settings. Developing conversational English skills is a priority for the women however we have also included focuses such as First Aid training and health workshops as part of our work with them. Where developing English skills is concerned, the women have been making some impressive progress. The women have also taken the lead in teaching yoga to our volunteers which has been fun all round!
We wish to thank each and every donor for making a difference here in Nepal!
