By Sophie Birkett - Head of Operations, Charitable Trust
Our achievement this month focused on our Charitable Trust activity of local rice planting. This year, our volunteers rolled up their sleeves and put in a hard day’s work planting 14 rice fields for a local family in Pame. The volunteers were able to gain constructive experience on the techniques of rice planting, as well as an understanding of communal work. The volunteers worked right next to our partner family in Pame to gain a better understanding of family dynamics as well as cooperation of the whole community.
The rice planting helped to raise funds for our beloved Street Children Home. The volunteers reached out to their own personal community in order to raise 1,53,430NPR ($1562), which was just 71,570NPR ($728) short of our initial goal. The funds are going to be directly applied to moving costs and rent for the new facility the street children have obtained.
Rice planting was a complete success and beneficial on a sphere that transcends all levels of GVI’s goals in Nepal. Apart from providing food for our local community, the activity provided skills and wisdom that our volunteers could not obtain in any other experience. The opportunity also arose for us to further strengthen our bond with the amazing local community of Pame. The ability to work side by side with the residents signifies GVI’s commitment to the efforts of betterment in all aspects of life of our partner communities. Due to hard work from our staff and volunteers regarding fundraising, the message and goal of our project was supported well beyond the borders of Nepal. This opportunity to include our friends, families and past volunteers in our goal further signified the current global drive to improve living conditions for all inhabitants of our earth.
GVI would like to give a big thanks to everyone involved in our most recent charitable trust. We all understand that global improvement for all is an uphill battle, but as long as we stay unified and strong the future will yield an end that will justify our hard work and dedication.
