This project will create a disability-friendly environment for children 4-19 years of age (who either dropped out of school or never enrolled in schools due to their physical disability) at Raymond Empowerment Foundation community schools. Our immediate objective is to adjust our school facilities to: have wheelchair accessible doorways, ramps at entries and exits of buildings, widen corridors of buildings for easy access, and construct accessible washrooms for physically disabled children.
According to World Bank, 16% of Ugandan Children are living with disability. Some children in this special needs category have never stepped in a class room due to absence of disability inclusive schools, especially those in rural communities. This project targets children in poor families who go for hours or even days a proper meal and medical attention. They will be integrated to a regular school so that they acquire life skills as basic as activities of daily living in their communities.
REF will educate the community, especially families with disabled children, to encourage education for them and create enabling conditions for them. Community leaders will be mobilized to help with educating parents and their communities to care for disabled children. The role of parents in school related activities and participation in school committees will be enhanced. Linkages between the school, teachers and communities will be strengthened.
The project will educate and support over 100 children in Mubende District, allowing them to be empowered mentally and economically. Engagement with community leaders, schools, government officials to support, promote and advocate for disabled child education will be developed.
