In Uganda, tens of thousands of children live with the heartbreaking reality of having lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS. While great progress has been made in the country’s fight against the virus, these young lives remain deeply affected—not just by the loss itself, but by what comes after.
For many of these children, life becomes a daily challenge. Some are cared for by aging grandparents. Others are left to raise younger siblings on their own. Many face stigma in their communities simply because their parents had HIV. That discrimination can shut them out of school, healthcare, or even friendships—making an already difficult journey even harder.
Despite these challenges, their resilience is incredible.
One of the most powerful stories in Uganda today is that of the grandmothers who have stepped up to raise their orphaned grandchildren. Particularly in rural areas like Mukono District where we are working, grandmothers are doing exactly that—often with little more than love and determination to keep them going.
These women are not just caregivers; they are heroes. They provide food, a safe place to sleep, and emotional support. In the process, they’re helping rebuild a sense of family and future for the children left in their care.
The road ahead is still long, but there’s hope. With continued support from individuals and communities around the world, these children can grow up with dignity, safety, and opportunity.
You can be part of that hope.
