Transcendence is a Caribbean human rights movement of gender-expansive people. This continuous hybrid safe space allows trans and NB people to revel together in our visibility and strengthen advocacy to advance our rights, well-being and emancipation. In intimate online conversations, gender-expansive people share experiences, support and joy. With in-person capacity building and gender expression showcases, we engage with activism and politicise our visibility.
With intolerance, social exclusion and criminalisation, transgender and non-binary people in the Caribbean remain hidden. An unaccepting and unsupportive environment leave gender-expansive people visibly constrained in the gender-binary as stigma and discrimination limit access to education, healthcare, housing and social spaces and negatively impact wellbeing and financial stability. Threat of violence, hate crimes and gaps in protection result in deleterious self-policing.
ECADE, Transwave Ja, Butterfly BB and UC Trans work to raise awareness and promote acceptance and support for trans and non-binary people. These efforts have coalesced in Transcendence, the human rights movement to build transgender and non-binary Caribbean activism and visibility. Transcendence includes a series of safe space conversations to support the trans and gender-non-conforming community, identify our needs and entry points for change.
Caribbean gender-expansive community will 1- understand the importance and impact of advocacy 2 - connect their realities and abilities to the work necessary to make change 3 - are more engaged, interested and aware of their existence as political bodies and their impact on the movement 4 - increase their visibility within the LGBTQ+ movement and 5 - Transcendence will expand and become more sustainable as amovement for advocacy and change
