Mid-November marks the beginning of the longest school holiday period for public school learners in Kenya. While this break provides an opportunity for rest and recovery for some, it can also present significant challenges for many boys from difficult home environments, increasing their vulnerability to anxiety, depression, and social isolation.
During this period, we leveraged our existing networks of youth resource centers and sports-based spaces—particularly football-focused environments—to continue engaging young people in structured mental health conversations. Our outreach targeted boys and young people aged 5–19 years from diverse backgrounds.
Through a combination of classroom-style discussions, guided nature walks, movement and dance activities, and mindfulness practices, we integrated practical wellness tools into our programming. Collectively, these interventions reached over 500 boys.
Encouragingly, we are observing a gradual but meaningful shift in how boys—and young people more broadly—perceive and engage with mental health, reflecting growing awareness, openness, and acceptance.
