The 2026 spring bird banding season at the Aras Bird Research and Education Center officially took flight on March 10th. This essential work, which continues through June 20th, is made possible by the dedicated efforts of our expert bird banders, passionate international volunteers, and the vital contributions of our donors.
Throughout the season, birds are safely captured using mist nets, carefully banded, and released back into the wild. To gain deeper insights into their incredible journeys, select species are also being fitted with satellite transmitters, allowing us to track their migration routes in real-time.
The Aras Wetlands stands as a critical ecological hub on major migration paths. It serves as a vital sanctuary for thousands of birds to rest, feed, and breed. Our ongoing banding and observation studies are crucial in providing the scientific evidence needed to demonstrate this area’s global importance year after year.
