By Joanne Marden | Donkey welfare coordinator
Dear Supporters,
As winter draws to a close and spring approaches, we are breathing a collective sigh of relief. The cold season is always a difficult time for working donkeys, and last year many suffered from severe nutritional challenges due to the long and harsh conditions. This year, however, we are seeing real improvement thanks to continued education, community engagement, and your generous support.
We are proud to report major progress in the production of safe harnesses and bridles. With the enrollment of two local community members in the production and support process, demand and interest in better equipment has grown significantly. Still, many donkeys remain unreached, and the need continues. At the same time, fewer cases of malnutrition have been reported compared to last year, showing that our efforts to educate and support donkey owners are making a tangible difference.
Looking ahead, fundraising efforts are underway to establish water points for working donkeys, as well as a specialised safe area where sick or injured animals can rest and recover. However, access to proper shelter and shade remains far below the necessary standard, and expanding initiatives to improve these conditions is a top priority for the year ahead.
The road to improved welfare for working donkeys is within reach, but only possible through the continued commitment of our supporters. With your help, we can meet the growing demand for safe equipment, create vital recovery spaces, and ensure that every donkey receives the care and dignity they deserve.
Thank you for standing with us in this mission. Together, we are changing lives , for both donkeys and the communities that rely on them.
Warm regards,
The Working Donkeys Project Team
