Dear Esteemed Donors
We are delighted to share an important milestone in our journey to create a safe, nurturing, and quality learning environment for homeless children in Tanzania. On behalf of Direct Relief Tanzania (DRT), we extend our heartfelt gratitude to every donor who has supported this project through GlobalGiving. Your generosity continues to inspire hope for some of the most vulnerable children in our country.
As many of you know, poverty remains one of the leading causes of homelessness in Tanzania. Nearly half of the population lives below the international poverty line, leaving thousands of children without stable homes or access to education. Although primary and secondary education are officially free, hidden costs such as uniforms, learning materials, accommodation, and meals prevent many vulnerable children from attending school. As a result, more than 45,000 children continue to live and survive on the streets, where they face hunger, violence, exploitation, substance abuse, and limited opportunities for a better future.
Our vision is to construct an English-medium primary school in Dodoma that will initially provide quality education, safe accommodation, nutritious meals, healthcare, and psychosocial support to 100 homeless children from different parts of Tanzania. Ultimately, the school will expand to serve more than 500 vulnerable children, helping them acquire knowledge, life skills, and confidence needed to become self-reliant adults while breaking the cycle of poverty.
Despite the fact that fundraising has progressed more slowly than anticipated, we are pleased to report that meaningful progress has been achieved over the past few months. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Direct Relief Tanzania has successfully completed the digging of a water well within the school compound. This is a significant achievement and one of the essential foundations for the entire project.
The newly constructed well will provide a reliable and sustainable source of clean water for the school community. The well will supply water for drinking, cooking, sanitation, handwashing, cleaning classrooms, and maintaining healthy hygiene standards. It will also support small-scale gardening activities that can contribute to improved nutrition for the children. Access to safe water is critical for creating a healthy learning environment and reducing the risk of waterborne diseases that often affect vulnerable communities.
This milestone represents much more than infrastructure. It symbolizes hope, dignity, and our unwavering commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn in a safe and healthy environment. Every step completed today brings us closer to continue opening the doors of a school where homeless children will not only receive an education but also experience the care, protection, and love they deserve.
We recognize, however, that much work still lies ahead. The funds raised so far remain significantly below the total amount required to complete the construction of classrooms, dormitories, dining facilities, sanitation blocks, staff houses, and other essential infrastructure. Additional resources are also needed to furnish classrooms, provide learning materials, recruit qualified teachers, and ensure the school is fully equipped.
Nevertheless, your contributions have demonstrated that meaningful change begins with collective action. Every donation, regardless of its size, has helped move this project forward. The successful completion of the water well would not have been possible without your trust, compassion, and belief in our mission.
To every donor who has already contributed, we extend our deepest appreciation. Your kindness is creating opportunities where none previously existed and giving vulnerable children a reason to dream again. You are helping transform lives not only through education but also by restoring hope and dignity to children who have experienced unimaginable hardship.
As we look ahead, we humbly invite you to continue walking this journey with us. Your continued support will make a thriving school where hundreds of homeless children will receive education, protection, healthcare, nutritious meals, and the opportunity to build brighter futures.
Every contribution large or small brings us one step closer to this life-changing school. Together, we can replace life on the streets with classrooms filled with learning, laughter, and hope. Together, we can give these children the chance to grow into healthy, educated, and productive citizens who will contribute positively to their communities.
Thank you for believing that every child deserves a safe place to learn, to dream, and to thrive.
