We are closing the project for the village library of Béréba. With the funds raised from GlobalGiving and other generous donations, we have been able to furnish the library with 2,100 books in French, English, Arabic and local languages.
This year marks the 11th anniversary of the opening of the library in Béréba. As the library of Béréba enters into its teenage years, the library continues to be the most successful of the FAVL libraries. In 2011, the library had 181 new registrations, 2,524 books checked out and 13,461 visitors! This would not be possible without the donations from sources like GlobalGiving that provide books to libraries like that in Béréba. In January 2012, there were 20 new registrations, 303 books checked out and 1,974 visitors! The two librarians in Béréba run weekly activities with library patrons, and a secondary school girls' club meets at the library on a weekly basis. A reading camp for primary school students was held in June 2011. 25 fourth graders attended the week-long camps to improve their reading skills through guided and free reading sessions, informational sessions on HIV/AIDS and success at school and creating a group comic about the importance of visiting a village library. The librarians also had the privilege of participating in a week-long training on HIV/AIDS, and have begun holding regular activities to inform villagers of what they learned. All in all, 2011 was an incredibly active and successful year for the village library in Béréba. We'd like to thank all of the donors who have made it possible to keep this library going for more than a decade after it started!
We'd like to thank all the generous donors who have helped us create a such a popular and integral cultural and informational center in this tiny Burkinabè village. If you are interested in further donating to a FAVL project, we have project to supply a series of graphic novels from Côte d'Ivoire to each of our libraries and to have reading camps for 25 students to improve their reading skills in the months of July, August and September 2012.
