The Bereba library recently hosted a story sharing time for a group of children. Each child chose a book to read and then shared what they read with their peers. Many local schools don't stress the importance of reading for pleasure and teachers don't have access to many materials besides standardized textbooks, so this activity gave students an opportunity to explore the wealth of stories housed at the library.
Another group of students had a discussion session about the importance of hygiene. At FAVL's summer reading camps, children discuss why it is important to wash their hands before they use materials in the library and this activity broadened the discussion to why it is important for them to wash their hands with soap at home before they eat. FAVL libraries promote both healthy reading AND healthy living habits.
