From Barriers to Bridges: The Power of Your Generosity

By Misco Mungai | Program Director

The HALI Access Network Bridge Fund exists to remove the final financial hurdles that stand between talented students from low-income backgrounds and life-changing education opportunities. These students earn full scholarships averaging $80,000 annually, yet face transition costs of up to $1,500, expenses that can derail their dreams. Thanks to your generosity during GlobalGiving’s July Bonus Day, we turned those barriers into bridges.

Your Impact in Action

Impact Highlights:

  • 17 students supported in the 2024/25 cycle
  • Impact across 6 countries: Burundi, Cameroon, Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe
  • $1M+ in annual scholarships unlocked
  • $1 invested unlocks $80 in scholarships
  • Students enrolled at Brown, Duke, Tufts, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Smith College, Carleton College, Berea College, the University of Rochester, the University of Notre Dame, and other institutions this August.
  • Students enrolled to study Economics and Mathematics, Architectural Studies, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Political Science, Fluid Mechanics, and other disciplines.

Your support covered essential transition costs, including visas, SEVIS fees, immunizations, passports and local travel, ensuring students arrived on campus ready to thrive.

Student Voices

For Eliphase, a 2024 Bridge Fund scholar at Northwestern, the Bridge Fund meant avoiding the sale of family land and stepping into a future of innovation and service. “To me, the Bridge Fund was more than money: it was a belief in me.” Today, he mentors peers and dreams of launching startups to create jobs in Burundi. He has also served as an International Peer Advisor, helping new students adjust to campus life, just as he was once helped.

Esther, a 2025 Bridge Fund scholar at Tufts, is exploring the intersection of sustainable design and cultural identity in architecture, transforming dreams into actionable plans. “Supporting students like me means investing in a more thoughtful, inclusive world. Today, my dreams are not just ideas; through mentorship and training, I am turning them into actionable plans” _ Esther.

Thank You!

Your gift didn’t just fund transition; it fueled leadership, resilience, and impact. As we look to the Giving Tuesday matching campaign, Dec. 2 at 12 a.m. to Dec. 3 at 12 p.m. EST, we invite you to stand with us again. Our 2026 goal is to support 30 students with transition costs and 16 students with multi-year funding for essential non-academic costs at universities offering partial scholarships. Together, we can ensure that no dream is deferred due to a lack of resources.
