Day Support Center For Adults With Disabilities

by Specially Adapted Resource Clubs (SPARC) Vetted since 2012

We believe that every person has a right to fully participate in their community. SPARC provides free day support for adults with disabilities in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. Twenty-four adults now have free ongoing education and recreation support three days a week, but thousands remain under-served by government and other agencies. This project will fund a third facility that supports ten more individuals.

We want every individual to live a life where they can fully engage with the community. Adults in Virginia who have disabilities often don't have that option. There are 140,000 people with developmental disabilities in Virginia. More than half of these people have intellectual disabilities. 5,311 of them are on a "intellectual disabilities waiting list". They don't receive resources from the state and half meet Virginia's "urgent need" criteria.

Each SPARC facility is in a public space and provides day support services for at least 10 individuals. We provide programs that help these individuals interact in the community, learn new skills and achieve personal goals. The impact reaches beyond the adults we serve and impacts their families, friends and the community at large. Each local community with a SPARC club rallies around the organization, proving that community services can allow all people to engage in their communities.

Long-Term Impact

More than 17,000 people with disabilities live at home with parents age 60 and over. As these parents "age in place", their adult children often have nowhere to turn when their parents can no longer care for them and before they are eligible for senior citizen programs. A younger group--children--represents an even larger group. 1 in 91 children in Virginia is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. When they leave high school, most will not receive state assistance.
