Every morning before dawn, Liberia’s local marketplaces come alive. Vibrant colors, the aroma of fresh produce, and the steady hum of commerce fill the air. The market women and men driving these stalls are the true economic backbone of Liberian communities. Yet, beneath the energetic hustle lies a quiet, structural barrier: over 40% of Liberian adults cannot read or write. For female and rural merchants, the numbers are even starker, with literacy rates dropping well under 35%. Operating a business without knowing how to read or count is a daily battle. Illiterate vendors face constant vulnerability to financial exploitation, struggle to calculate accurate profits, and remain locked out of formal bank loans or mobile money systems.

This is where Iman House has stepped in for nearly forty years, and why our presence in Liberia is more critical than ever. By offering free, accessible literacy and math classes in close proximity to where merchants work, we are transforming the marketplace into a launchpad for economic independence. The impact of donor support is immediate and profound. When a marketeer learns to read and manage their “ledger”, they go from surviving to thriving. They can safely count their change, negotiate fair prices, navigate digital financial tools, and grow their business.

One of our long time students, Varney, shared: “When I was 10, I had the talent to fix any car, but no money for school. I was interested in learning how to repair cars but I couldn't read, write, or count. As a mechanic boy who grew into the man I am today, I did all the hard work and my repair skills grew; but senior mechanics cheated me because I could not calculate my correct percentage. Everything changed when I entered the free literacy class at Imani House Literacy Program in my community. I learned  math, I learn book, and now my income has almost tripled.  Nobody can cheat me again. Today, I write my own name and I opened my own bank account. Handwork plus education is sweet and I am grateful.”

Under the dim glow of classroom lights, the weary but determined faces market traders tell a story of profound defiance. Having spent an exhausting day navigating the vibrant hustle of the markets, they refuse to let the lack of formal education dictate their limits.  Pens and notebooks are picked up in the dark to claim financial independence, self-reliance, and a seat at the table in the light of day.

Our local community leaders believe deeply in our mission. To show their commitment, they have always stepped up to provide us with free classroom space—a powerful in-kind contribution worth $600.00 annually in saved rent. The community is doing its part and we are thankful for your help to bridge the final gap. We need just $1,975.00 annually to fully sustain our program budget. Because our overhead is kept incredibly low by our community partnerships, every dollar you give goes directly toward learning materials, teacher support, and classroom supplies.

The journey out of generational poverty begins when parents achieve literacy, transforming them into fierce education advocates who use their expanded earning potential to fund their children’s tuition, uniforms, and books. Community-led organizations like ours anchor this deep familial transformation by keeping vital, on-the-ground programming fully accessible. Sustaining these investments does not simply fund isolated classrooms; it directly finances a lasting cycle of economic self-reliance, gender equality, and community empowerment.
