Imani House, Inc. has provided Adult Education services to the Liberian people since 1993. Between then and now the project has served thousands of people with literacy and math classes and operates sites at Duala Markets and VOA . All present and past students in the program were/are of low educational standing, the majority living in abject poverty.
According to the recent USAID International Data & Economic Analysis report 51.7% of Liberia's adult population is illiterate, which prior to the decades long civil war was between 25%-35%. While there are many factors that have contributed to this including poverty, which existed before the war; it was the civil war that set the country back. During the war education could not be a priority for the citizens when survival was at stake.
The Adult Education Program has assisted in solving this problem over the years with the provision of classes at 2 locations in Monrovia for 100 students annually. Students learn using the Laubach Way to Reading Method which has a very high success rate. We also have math classes. Over 90% of our students graduate successfully, their new found educational status allows them to find better jobs, help their children with homework, pursue additional education and more.
Our Adult Education program helps students and their families realize their potential. By improving the self-esteem and earning power of adults, we're enabling them and their families to be more successful. A more literate population is essential for the regrowth and return to greatness Liberia once knew. Though the civil war ended many years ago Liberian infrastructure is still in shambles with much work to do. An illiterate population cannot accomplish what is necessary.
