Regional exchanges on habitat and climate change

By Maria Silvia Emanuelli | Coordinator

Promotion of regional exchanges on habitat and its connection with the climate change agenda.

In the past few months, there has been an internal discussion among organizations and social actors on the connection between the climate crisis and habitat and housing, and the few opportunities that the experiences and responses, already tested in the territories, have in international debates on climate. In view of this absence, there is a need to highlight this matter and to continue facilitating spaces for dialogue in the region, as the climate crisis has serious impacts on the enjoyment of the right to adequate housing in rural and urban areas, even leading to climate displacement. Likewise, housing itself contributes to climate change through the construction sector and the energy consumption of buildings, making it urgent to identify and encourage alternative proposals that are sustainable and environmentally friendly.
With this in mind, during these months we have been working on the organization of the hybrid forum “Habitat crisis and climate change: from local responses to the international debate”, to be held on the 15 and 16 of November of this year. This forum will have the participation of 20 different experiences of Social Production of Habitat (SPH), neighborhood improvement, food and energy sovereignty, among others, from countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico and Peru. The experiences will share their strategies, achievements and obstacles in their processes. After these presentations, we will have the opportunity to listen to the interventions of five representatives of international networks and other actors highly involved in climate debates in order to build a common strategy that will allow us to promote future analysis, reflections and actions to advance in the democratization of decisions and of climate funds from the perspective of human rights.
