Our work promoting adequate housing in Latin America

Eighth Regional Meeting of SPH
Eighth Regional Meeting of SPH

With the support given to this project, HIC-AL has followed up on the actions of the Regional Working Group (RWG) on Social Production of Habitat (SPH) in the Latin American region. In particular, it has helped finance certain expenses for the Eighth Regional Meeting of SPH that took place on April 24-25 in the city of Caracas, Venezuela in a hybrid format (face-to-face and online).

There were 43 participants from 9 countries at this meeting: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru and Mexico. The dialogue gathered information on the different situations the participants’ countries are going through, which impact the efforts of seeking recognition of the human right to adequate housing, as well as other rights related to habitat such as land, water, sanitation, and so forth. Some of the topics addressed were proposals for follow-up and action (analysis, meetings, workshops, strategy building, etc.); stances on processes that violate the aforementioned rights at a national and international level; the importance of maintaining and strengthening coordination and organization among the RWG; as well as regional priorities to be addressed in interregional spaces that will be held this year. Finally, the RWG reached an agreement to strengthen the actions and follow-up of the group, some of which will also be supported through this project (including the publication of materials, facilitation of discussion forums, and dissemination of relevant information).

This meeting has been an extremely valuable space to discuss the different approaches to these issues, exchange knowledge and experience, and define a national and regional course of action. The RWG endorses the commitment to the processes related to housing and habitat at the national and regional level, and although complexities and obstacles have been identified in the efforts being made, we are still determined to improve the visibility and recognition of the processes of SPH and, with this, achieving the human right to adequate housing.
