Ayub - Building Peace Through Art

By Zahabiya Karimi | Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator

“We live surrounded by fear and uncertainty. Small issues can spark violent clashes between different ethnic groups in our area. I just want peace so that we live our lives fully, do our businesses, sit freely on the sidewalks and our children do not miss school even for a day."

It takes courage to dream of peace growing up in Lyari, one of the most dangerous, gang-fested and poverty stricken areas in Karachi, Pakistan. After graduating from TCF in 2013, Ayub got involved in an effort to promote peace through art under the banner of ‘I am Karachi.’ The initiative focused on illustrating positive values such as peace, tolerance and diversity, which Pakistani society lacks greatly, especially an area such as Lyari.

Ayub has not only been successful in making a difference through his art, he also enjoys a promising career with more than fifty of his paintings so far been exhibited at the National Museum of Pakistan. He attribtes gaining confidence to pursue his dream through the TCF Rahbar programme, a mentoring programme which provides guidance to students through volunteer mentors. Ayub's mentor encouraged him to never give up on doing what he loved.
