Vanakum, Ayubowan and Hello,
We are pleased to share the latest updates and achievements from Tea Leaf Trust (TLT). This report offers a detailed overview of the significant impact your support has had on the Sri Lankan tea estate communities, as outlined in our TLT 2023 Impact Report, which you can find in the links below.
Business Fair 2024
In July, before the students and staff took a well-deserved break, they undertook one final challenge: to organise a successful business fair. Within just ten days, our teams transformed their education centres into vibrant marketplaces, showcasing their entrepreneurial skills.
The Business Fairs across all our centres commenced on 10th July. Despite the challenges, including unfavourable weather conditions, the students worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the event. Their efforts were rewarded with a strong turnout, as parents, alumni, CEP centre students, local residents, and visitors from surrounding areas flocked to the fairs. The stalls were lively and engaging, with highlights including a captivating magic show and unique culinary offerings.
The Aram Initiative’s Collaboration with Tea Leaf Trust
Earlier this summer, Tea Leaf Trust had the pleasure of hosting volunteers from The Aram Initiative at TLC Maskeliya as part of their annual visit to Sri Lanka.
The Aram Initiative was established by a group of young professionals and university students who sought to reconnect with their Sri Lankan roots while contributing to meaningful causes. Their visit to TLC Maskeliya was a highlight of their trip, allowing them to witness firsthand the positive impact of TLT’s work. The team was particularly impressed by the quality of English spoken by the students and the strong sense of community and engagement within the centre.
Global Support for Sri Lankan Teachers
Building on the success of last year’s Rotary Global Grant Teacher Training programme, we have continued to enhance education across tea estate schools. In July, another 24 government-appointed English teachers completed the six-month programme, which was delivered by Tea Leaf Trust graduate, Mrs Kavinirosha Ponnusamy, and supported by our Volunteer Coordinator, Keith Ledbury.
These government school teachers, who have full-time positions, dedicated three evenings per week to this programme, which also included additional conversation classes. The programme has significantly improved the confidence and spoken English skills of these teachers, thanks to the efforts of our volunteers, who provide invaluable support through regular conversations.
Volunteering with Tea Leaf Trust
We recently caught up with Mark Randall, who volunteered with TLT in 2019, to reflect on his experience and the lasting impact it has had on him.
Mark became involved with TLT after discovering our website and wanting to make a meaningful contribution during his visit to Sri Lanka. He organised fundraising events at his workplace, which supported the school while he self-funded his travel expenses. Mark’s experience was overwhelmingly positive, and he has continued to share stories of his time with TLT, describing it as both inspiring and empowering.
Mark’s experience highlights the profound impact that volunteering can have, not only on the communities served but also on the volunteers themselves. We offer a range of volunteering opportunities throughout the year, from short-term visits to longer-term placements.
If you are interested in learning more about volunteering with TLT, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact us through our website.
