Since April, Centre Marembo began to adopt new strategies to accommodate to the new regulations announced by the Rwandan government to slow down the spread of COVID-19. These new strategies are now implemented in our five “pillar” programs are described as followed:

  • Rehabilitation and Integration Program: In order to follow the COVID-19 preventative guidelines from the government, Centre Marembo is limited to have 20 vulnerable girls in this program. There are two main requirements to those who are eligible to stay at the shelter: the girl must be tested negative for the COVID test kit; and she must have no family or relatives to seek support from. The girls who previously lived at the shelter are now reintegrated with their families and getting direct support from Centre Marembo. Under such unfortunate circumstances we all are living in, Centre Marembo made the decision to focus to those who are highly exposed to danger of hunger, poor hygiene and nutrition, sexual abuse and rape, and other potential dangers encounter on the streets and have no one to seek for help.

  • Justice, Legal Counselling & Advocacy Program: As COVID-19 brought onto a halt on all levels of education institutions and manual labour jobs, children and young girls who live from disadvantaged backgrounds are now wondering in the streets, begging for money or seek for an opportunity to work to support themselves and their families. Increase cases of abuse and any other sexual and/or violent acts against the girls have been reported. To spread the awareness of GBV, Centre Marembo partnered with RIB (Rwanda Investigation Bureau) to plan out campaigns and other planned activities to bring the public attention about the GBV issue.

  • Education and Vocational Training Program: Some of the secondary (S1-S6) and primary (P4-P6) students began their classes on November; as for pre-kinder and kindergarteners (P1-P3), their classes won’t start until the government make their announcement point in 2021. This puts pressure for young mothers to stay at home to look after their young children while waiting. Regarding to the Vocational Training activities, Centre Marembo has limited the number for the trainees.

  • Socio-Economic & Development Program: Suspended activities including farming and vocational training due to limited numbers of beneficiaries to run this program. Our limit is 15 maximum and the fact that young mothers are staying home to look after their children due to closure of low-level institutions, this program is postponed for now.

  • Healthcare Program: In response to the high influx of patients, reported cases of COVID and the insufficient financial costs to pay the staff and medical supplies, the clinic is now closed. We are waiting for government support to re-open our clinic.
