Juma, a 16-year-old boy from Kenya’s coastal region, lives a life defined by resilience in the face of extreme poverty. Coming from a dysfunctional family, Juma and his siblings have experienced frequent interruptions in their education. The lack of basic necessities, especially food—forces them to skip school for days or even weeks, resorting to menial jobs, begging, or selling small items to survive and support their own schooling. His academic journey has been a painful cycle of absence and rejection. After weeks away from school, Juma is often met not with understanding but with mockery, shame, and isolation.
At Grade 7, he remains academically below average, not due to lack of potential, but due to systemic barriers and unmet needs. Despite all this, Juma dreams of finishing school, becoming a businessman, and building his family a safe and decent home. “Our house is so bad—especially when it rains, you’re neither in nor out. It really pains me,” he shares. At Glad’s House, Juma has found a place where he can study, feel safe, and build his confidence. But he needs sustained support, food, school items, and mentorship, to break the cycle of poverty and realize his dreams. His story is a call to action.
