Since our last update, Potential Energy has been working on a 3-stage process to expand to new regions in Darfur. Historically, our project has focused operations in North Darfur, where we work with the Sudanese charity, Sustainable Action Group. We are now piloting projects in South and West Darfur with new potential partners. The project's 3 stages include:
At the time of this report, Stage 2 is well underway with plans to complete Stage 3 at the end of September 2014.
For this new project, Potential Energy is working with the organization Malam Darfur Peace and Development (MDPD) in Nyala (South Darfur) and a local charity called Nidaa that is based in ElGinena (West Darfur). Both partners have been trained by our team on the project, which includes promoting the Berkeley-Darfur Stove and training users on how to properly use the stove in order to maximize reductions in smoke, wood consumption and time spent when cooking. MDPD will conduct sales directly through its office in Nyala, while Nidaa will collaborate with a women's association that has wider and deeper geographical cover in ElGinena and surrounding areas. In addition to marketing the stove, we are working with these organizations to conduct surveys in their communities in order to collect more information about our target market for the stove and to evaluate the outcomes of this pilot project.
The total number of direct beneficiaries is 600, with 300 new stove users in West Darfur and 300 in South Darfur. With an average household size of 6 in Darfur, the total number of beneficiaries is 3600. Assuming a 50% gender distribution, half of these individuals are women of varying ages who are engaged in cooking over inefficient cookstoves which directly affect their (and children’s) health and availability to work or perform other household chores.
