Project Report | Sep 21, 2017
Support 2000 Kenya school girls with reusable pads

By Lucy Mathenge | Project Assistant

This project was uploaded on GlobalGiving site in June 2017 and it is the latest project by Necofa.  The project has started very well with well-wishers contributing generously to our project and we really appreciate their kind support.  We have started implementing the project as we have already received funds from GlobalGiving again we thank them for their prompt action.  Am happy to report that with the funds received we managed to purchase a sewing machine for the Karunga Women Group which they used to make 80 sets of reusable sanitary pads.  Two group members attended 2 weeks training in Uganda in August 2017 to improve on their skills in making the pads.

With the learned skills they are training other group members and we confirm that the quality of the pads was very good.  The sanitary pads were distributed to 80 girls of Timdolel primary school in Mariashoni location, Molo sub-county in Nakuru County.  Mariashoni location is in Mau Forest and the community living there is the minority Ogiek community.  The place is remote and the community has limited access to urban centers.  Pupils in most schools in Mariashoni have not had much exposure to the current world.  We distributed the pads to the girls in the school starting from the fourth grade to eighth grade.

We had the opportunity to discuss with the girls about adolescent, hygiene, reproduction and their school performance.  They appreciated and promised to work hard in their studies for better future mentioning that they will not be missing school during their periods as it was previously.  On the other hand Karunga women group members appreciated the great support given to them as they were able to make the sanitary pads with a lot of ease.  They hope to continue perfecting their skills to increase their production of the pads which will results in improved livelihood.  On behalf of the Karunga Women Group and Timdolel primary school we express our gratitude to all those who generously contributed to this project for the benefit of our communities.  We request you to continue supporting us as well as sharing the successes and achievements with others.

Thank you very much and be blessed
