Due to continued conflict in south Sudan, many families are facing starvation. Torit is one of the counties mostly affected. People here depend on farming activities which have been disrupted by conflict for the last four years. Thus families rely on relief assistance which is far much below the demand forcing families to survive on one meal per day. Two out of three children in this county is suffering from acute malnutrition. WFP is trying to support but the demand outstrips the supply.
Malnutrition is a major challenge facing children in south Sudan. In Torit county, the problem is worsening day by day. The main source of food has been farming. Now farming is no longer there because of continued fighting since 2016. Many children screened are found to be suffering from malnutrition related diseases. Humanitarian agencies are trying to support but cannot cover every where- the demand is so huge. Over 10,000 children in Torit County are in dire need of food to save their lives.
Charity Aid Foundation, being a grassroot organization intends to respond by providing nutritional supplements to at least 1000 malnourished for a period of 3 months. It will also facilitate treatment for those who fall sick during the project period. Mother will be trained on nutrition and dietary needs of children who are under 5, focusing on locally available foods. They will be encouraged and supported to grow fast growing vegetables in form of Kitchen gardening for sustainability.
The project is expected to save the lives of 1000 starving children giving them a chance to lead good life. Mothers of these children who will be trained on nutrition will be able feed their children appropriately there by reducing cases of malnutrition. About 100 households with acute food scarcity will be encouraged and supported to grow vegetables which will supplement household food needs. The practice is expected to continue and have multiplier effect to reach more households in the county.
