Free antenatal services; encouraging the locals

By Ajisekola Amos | Project leader

Working towards the main objective of this project, which is to encourage the poor local pregnant women to access antenatal care services provided by trained health professionals. Thus, reducing the global burden of pregnancy and child birth related mortality. The first session of antenatal clinic was conducted in partnership with the Nigeria police medical services, police clinic Iseyin. No fewer than thirty(30) pregnant women benefited. The success of this program wasn't without the involvement of major community groups (eg women association) and the community leaders who helped in mobilization of the pregnant women. Activities include booking, physical examination, health education etc. There was distribution of vitamin supplements and other routine medications. Of importance is distribution of malaria preventive drugs (IPTs) to the eligible ones.  Health education during the antenatal session focused on the importance of balanced  nutrition, exercise, sex, personal hygiene and general disease prevention in pregnancy.

However, this project plans a multi sectoral involvement in order to enhance a wider coverage of the local women. Only a little but highly impactful activities have been carried out. More pregnant women are showing up almost on daily basis. Our financial capabilities are getting exhausted as we have not been able to raise enough fund for necessary logistics. Majority of these women are used to patronizing unprofessional traditional healers and quacks. Providing them with a free professional antenatal services is a huge relief and it needs to be sustained. Pregnancy is not supposed to be a death or disability sentence to the bearer. The unborn also deserves a better life from fertilization to birth and beyond. "Little drops make an ocean", your kind donations will move us forward and make you happier!
