Our Children Learn About Sustainability

The new veggie garden
The new veggie garden

Hi Supporters,

We currently have a group of volunteers from Ohio State University visiting us in South Africa, it's been great having them here and they have helped us at our pre-school.

Sadly everyone living in poverty in our townships means many people result in stealing, our centre over the past 3 months has been broken into 4 times and they have stolen anything metal which included door handles, taps, handrail fixtures, guttering, hooks, electrical cables and trunking. By stealing this they also left the taps leaking and so our carpets have been flooded and now we are at risk of mould.

Our team with the support of the volunteers continued to keep the children smiling and engaged and even took some unused flower beds and planted veggie seeds to make a mini garden with the children - we are so excited as when they grow we can use this in the food we provide the children.

Sadly your donations have had to go to work replacing doors, fixtures and fittings but we have replaced everything with plastic as this is less attractive to criminals, we have also costed up security systems for the school but sadly we need $600 a month and we can only do this once we have this set amount being raised monthly so we can't do this yet. Everything is replaced but our next priority over the next couple of weeks is to raise enough funds to remove the current wet carpets, rent a dehumidifier to dry out the classrooms and then purchase new flooring, this is going to be expensive and while we try had to fundraise it might take us a little time to get there so we are going to have to close a classroom and join groups as we can't teach in unsafe mould classrooms.

It's been a challenge but the children and safe power through and having some visitors for 2 weeks but a smile on everyone's face so thank you!

Best,

Trina
