This project supports the medical treatment of 120 children with thalassemia in Lebanon. Since June 2023, Karma provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care to vulnerable children with Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia in Lebanon. Karma free of charge services include covering the cost of hospitalization for phenotyped blood transfusions at Elias Hrawi Governmental Hospital in Zahle, organization of blood donation campaigns, distribution of medications and medical referrals.
In Lebanon, many vulnerable Lebanese and Syrian refugee children lack access to comprehensive medical treatment, particularly in the areas of secondary and tertiary healthcare for chronic or life-threatening conditions. Children with thalassemia, who require regular and thorough medical care, often go untreated because their families cannot afford the costs. Karma's mission is to ensure these children receive the comprehensive medical care they need.
Karma's approach focuses on delivering comprehensive medical care to children with thalassemia. This involves coordinating with various healthcare providers to address all aspects of the children's health. Our services include: hospitalizations for phenotyped blood transfusions, continuous recruitment of blood donors, referral and administration of iron chelation therapy, medical follow-ups and specialist referrals and psychosocial support, ensuring that the patient receives all needed care.
With regular and necessary medical treatment, patients with thalassemia can lead normal and healthy lives. Karma's patients attend school, build friendships, pursue hobbies, and experience minimal disruption from their condition in their daily lives. Additionally, Karma collaborates with stakeholders like UNHCR to facilitate the resettlement of patients with refugee status, ensuring the long-term continuation of their medical care.
