Thanks in part to your generous support, Glenwood Academy's 2015 Summer Enrichment Program was a success! The program having concluded, we will draw this campaign to a close until next year!
Program Recap
In the education sector, there is concern about the three month-long summer break's effect on students' educational attainment, especially for those at-risk of falling off-track to graduation. To address the potential impact of "summer learning loss," Glenwood Academy developed the Summer Enrichment Program, which offers students the opportunity to sustain and improve academic skills in reading, language, math, and cognitive processing skills after the traditional school year ends.
Every year the Summer Enrichment program has a different theme. This year's theme was "United States of America!" that was designed to help students improve both academic skills and background knowledge related to our country. Students read various books and materials focusing on US geography, historic figures, important facts, and vocabulary. They also worked with hands-on math activities designed to improve math computation, applications, and concepts. Additionally, students participated in written expression activities; focusing on sentence and paragraph writing, and application of grammar skills. To culminate their learning, they wrote and read poetry related to United States.
Off-campus experiential learning is also an important component of Summer Enrichment. Students took field trips relating to this year’s theme. They visited the Sand Ridge Nature Center and took an Architectural Boat Cruise on the Chicago River. They also performed Reader’s Theatre activities, and listened to a professional story teller.
With having such a fun, dynamic experience, students are already looking forward to the 2017 Summer Enrichment Program!
