S U K R U P A - Quarterly progress report of SUKRUPA’s programs Oct-Dec.’17

SUKRUPA is delighted to report the progress of different programs carried out during the quarter Oct-Dec.’17 as given below.

SUKRUPA’s major programs are:

  1. SUKRUPA Education Centre
  2. SUKALP
  3. SUMARGADARSHAK
  4. SUJANAVIKAS

ACHIEVEMENTS

  1. SUKRUPA Education Centre

During the current academic year 400 (192 boys and 208 girls) children are getting educational support through formal education through the school run by SUKRUPA for the underprivileged children from pre kg to 10th Grade in which 263 are in the primary levels (Pre kg to 5th Grade) and 137 children are in the high school levels (6-10th grades). 7 months in the academic year has been completed starting from June and another three and a half months left for the annual examination. The following are some of the activities / events carried out and helped children to gain knowledge and improvement in studies.

1.1  Capacity Building Training for Teachers

Conducted capacity building trainings for 21 teachers on advanced and innovative teaching methodologies along with an exposure to a best school in the locality which made them to adopt new teaching methods and models. The 3 days training was facilitated by the management team on the subjects like Team building, goal setting, organizational values and integration etc. Two experts from outside were hired and facilitated session on story telling methods and techniques and theatre education in teaching.

One day visit was organized to all the Teachers and the Management team to one of the international school called Kunskapsskolan located at Sarjapur, Bengaluru.   SUKRUPA team was thrilled to see the educational methods of kunskapsskolan. It was a great opportunity for the Management and teachers of SUKRUPA to visit their school. Our teachers had a wonderful experience interacting and discussions with the teachers of Kunskapsskolan. Our Teachers have enriched with different learning methodologies like personalized learning, setting goals for students, creating a learning portal, schedule and planning, personal coaching for students and more.

1.2  OPEN DAY in the school

Open day was conducted in the school on 16th Dec.’17, which is a day which all the children, parents and teachers await every year at SUKRUPA. It’s a day where children celebrate, experience and share knowledge of their diverse subjects, topics and themes through exhibitions and cultural events. Around 120 parents, 50 well-wishers of SUKRUPA, Bankers and 100 public people were witnessed the program and appreciate children for their wonderful effort in displaying different models of their learning in the school.

There were a wide array of subjects that were showcased starting from History, Economics, Geography, Biology, Chemistry, Literature, Sports, Music, Art, Theatre and much more. It was an extravaganza. The Creative Art section was marveled with artistic work done by the students, conducted street theatre on clean and green city for an awareness on global warming where all the visitors watched the performances and appreciated children’s talents. During the occasion   screened videos of some of the success stories of the school and college.

We look forward to creating many such programs which will enhance the learnings of students, encourage creativity and motivate strive for knowledge and education.

1.3  Periodical tests and exams

The school children had their First Semester exam of the academic year in the month of Sep-Oct.’17 and spent 2 weeks semester and Dasara festival holidays. The school was reopened on 27th Nov.’17 and announced class wise marks of the children. Comparatively the performance of the children have been improving.

1.4  Other events carried out in the school

Sensitizing school children on different festivals, culture, traditions, and state’s heritages remembering great leaders of the past are some of the events carried out during the quarter. Following events were conducted in the school and helped children to enhance and sensitized on the same.

1.4. A) Kannada Rajyotsava : This is one of the important days for the people of Karnataka state celebrated on 1st November of every year as a state formation day. This was the day in 1956 when all the Kannada speaking regions of South India were merged to form the state of Karnataka. Rajyotsava day is celebrated with great joy and vigor all over the state of Karnataka. The entire state wears a festive look on this day as the red and yellow Kannadiga flag are hoisted at different strategic locations across the state. Since it is a govt., holiday our school children were celebrated one day before the festival with awareness messages, cultural events and the importance.

1.4. B) Children’s day celebration : The children’s day was celebrated on 14th November and made children and the teachers to remember the great leader on the birthday of the first Prime Minister of independent India, who was fondly called Chacha Nehru (Uncle Nehru) and who emphasized the importance of giving love and affection to children, to give him tribute after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964. Cultural events were conducted by the children and celebrated with sweets sponsored by well-wishers. Essay completion was conducted for the high school children on Gender and awarded with prizes and certificates for the winners. Mr.Munegowda, Programme co-ordinator from SMILE Foundation a faith based organization who has been supporting SUKRUPA for children education (partly) and Dr.Geetha Patil from Chaitanya hospital were attended the event as guests and gave awareness speeches. Gifts / prizes were distributed to the rank holders in the school.

1.4. C) Witnessing BALLET SHOW: It was a great exposure for 200 children at SUKRUPA to watch the Ballet Show organized by Lewis foundation at Ambetkar Bhavan, Bangalore. The children got an opportunity to watch the different kinds of ballets organized by the Lewis Foundation with free tickets. Thanks to the organizers of LEWIS Foundation who gave a chance to our kids in the wonderful event. We look forward to many more such events in the coming years.

1.4. D) Corporate connects: SUKRUPA’s school children had an opportunity to connect with the employees of two corporates namely ADOBE and INTEL who have come forward to support and collaborated with SUKRUPA and organized sports events for the school children. Around 100 children were participated in the event and won prizes. Chess game, kabaddi, running race, sack race, lemon and spoon etc., were conducted and children had fun. Breakfast and lunch were also provided for the children participated. The employees of the two companies also had a wonderful time with our children through interaction and sharing company details.

 

  1. SUKALP (Sukrupa After school life skills program)

110 children from 6-9th grades are supported in the life skills program conducted after school hours from November 2018. Dance, Music, theatre education, board games, personality skills, computer skills etc are taught to the children regularly from Monday to Friday and helped them in learning new skills and knowledge. Experts in teaching dance, music and theatre education skills are hired and conducted classes. College volunteers, internship students are also support in sensitizing our children. Apart from other skills 50 Children learn Bharatnatyam, Folk and western dance, 41 music, 2 learn in musical instruments and 22 learn theatre skills.

The theatre group performed a show during the “open day” program conducted in the school on the theme “Clean and Green city” and got appreciated by the visitors and guests.

  1. SUMARGADHARSHAK – Scholarships and mentoring program for college studies

One day career building workshop was conducted for the college students who are the beneficiaries of SUMARGADARSHAK program of SUKRUPA. 50 students were participated and learnt new skills on Social responsibility, goal setting, choice making, personal values etc. The sessions were facilitated by the Executive Director, Director-Chief mentor and Director – Operations. Ms.Debapriya from Mi-Shift organization was invited to facilitate on Choice making which enlightened the program.

3.1 Beneficiaries Feedback:

Anjali a graduate from Mount Carmel College says that

“It was a very experiential learning here at SUKRUPA. The opportunity to attend these kind of workshops is very expensive and difficult but SUKRUPA is doing it without expecting anything in return, I really gained a lot form this program”

Monica a student of Karnataka PU College says

“I learnt how I should be with people, steps I should to take to develop my personality and I was able to realize my inner strength through the workshop. It was exciting to work in a team, understanding each other and complete a task”.

 

  1. SUJANAVIKAS – Women empowerment and Skill development Program

SUKRUPA has initiated to work with the rural communities focusing on women empowerment and skills development. A new area with 10 villages has been identified in Kolar District of Karnataka State to enhance and support women self-help groups in their socio economic development. 3 monthly review meetings were conducted with the group representatives and provided necessary guidance and support in conducting regular community meetings, savings, micro finance, bank linkages etc.

 

SUKRUPA has also identified one NGO called MYRADA and proposed our willingness to collaborate in the field of women entrepreneurship, micro enterprise promotion and agriculture promotions. It is a successful attempt and both the parties have exchanged ideas and agreed for the collaborative projects. Necessary field visits, ideas, plans have been made and shared together. The proposed program will be commenced from April 2018, the next financial year.

Visitors

  • It was a privilege to have Kiki Jerneheim, Academic Director/Head of School and other team of Kunskapsskolan School Cecilia, Linda Eksholm, and Armi Tulldahl visiting our school and interacting with the children and the management team.
  • A group of 15 delegates especially students and Teachers through Mi-shift organization, France visited SUKRUPA on the 14th of December as a part of their cultural exchange program in India. They were inspired to know the work that we do at SUKRUPA. They spent time with the children, talking to individual students, getting to know their stories and interchanging knowledge about France and India. The Mi-shift personnel were impressed to see the active participation of students and interaction that they had with the children.
