Mon Yee, a dedicated medical student from Myanmar, is on a mission to improve mental healthcare access for underserved communities. She is pursuing a medical degree at Xi'an JiaoTong University in China with the support of Wedu's education funding (FISAs) thanks to your help. This is her story.
Her humanitarian work with World Health Organization and Solidarités International took her to Rakhine State in Myanmar where she led hygiene promotion activities for internally displaced persons. Witnessing the profound impact of mental health challenges on vulnerable populations in conflict-affected regions made her realise that addressing basic needs alone is insufficient. These communities urgently require access to mental healthcare and services to enhance their overall well-being.
To pursue this change, Mon Yee resolved to pursue a medical degree at Xi'an JiaoTong University in China. She also applied to become a Rising Star at Wedu in 2022 and was matched with a mentor to help refine her changemaking goals and communication skills. But she faced financial challenges in completing her education due to the devaluation of currency in Myanmar and her single mother's diminished ability to provide financial support.
Amid numerous funding options available to her, Mon Yee opted for a FISA to support her educational journey. To her, FISA represents more than financial assistance; it signifies an opportunity to continue her education while gaining access to invaluable mentorship, networking opportunities, and other leadership resources. All of which support her growth and influence as an emerging healthcare leader in Myanmar.
" I firmly believe that when women have the opportunity to complete their education on their own terms, they become powerful leaders who can shape a more equitable and inclusive society and inspire other women to follow their dreams.
After graduation, I envision myself actively engaging in healthcare initiatives, both locally and globally. My primary focus will be on addressing healthcare disparities and working towards providing quality medical care to underserved populations. Additionally, I aspire to be involved in community outreach programs, promoting health education and preventive care. Through my work, I aim to create sustainable and impactful changes that will improve the well-being and quality of life for individuals and communities in need."
