Kids during one of the meals
We are pleased to provide an update on the progress and impact of the ongoing Virtues Project at Mwiyenga and St. Joseph's Eshirumba primary schools. This report emphasizes the significant contribution of the Virtues Project strategies training in ensuring that children thrive, are cared for and receive quality education.
Mwiyenga Virtues Program:
At Mwiyenga, the virtues programs continue to be implemented successfully. Every Monday, learners participate in a virtues pick and actively practice the five strategies taught. Additionally, we have established the Mwiyenga Legacy Courage group, comprising teachers who have been trained in Virtues and have previously taught at Mwiyenga. The group was formed to support one another and enhance the benevolent kitty and lunch program.
Addressing Child Hunger and Absenteeism:
Recognizing the challenges faced by the community, especially the high cost of living and resulting child hunger, the Mwiyenga Legacy Courage group has taken initiative to support each other and the learners. Each member contributes 500/- per month, out of which 200/- is allocated to a Merry-go-round savings scheme for two people, 200/- goes towards the benevolent fund, and 100/- is allocated to the lunch program. This collective effort ensures that children have access to meals, reducing absenteeism and improving their performance.
Impact at St. Joseph's Eshirumba Primary School:
The situation at St. Joseph's Eshirumba Primary School is even more challenging. Many students are absent from class, and those present often struggle with weakness and lack of energy. After implementing the Virtues training to the staff, we joined hands and introduced a lunch program to address the dire situation.
Addressing Extreme Poverty:
A heart-wrenching incident involving three grade two learners highlighted the extreme poverty faced by some students. The learners had been absent for two days, and when inquired about the reason, one student revealed that they had only consumed warm water for supper during those nights. The student was too weak to walk, and his elder brother had to search for guavas to provide some sustenance. This incident motivated us to introduce the lunch program at St. Joseph's Eshirumba, aiming to alleviate hunger and improve attendance and academic performance.
Positive Changes and Improved Well-being:
The introduction of the Virtues program at St. Joseph's Eshirumba Primary School has brought about remarkable positive changes. The virtues pick is conducted every Monday during assembly, and the Virtues club members meet every Tuesday morning to practice the five strategies and share challenges and strengths. Virtues songs are also taught to the students. The headteacher commended the Virtues club members, noting that the new changes have revitalized the school environment. Instances of theft have decreased, attendance has improved, and children have become more responsible, cheerful, and optimistic. As a result, the last examination saw improved performance, and the school received recognition for its achievements.
Conclusion:
The Virtues Project, with its focus on generosity, kindness, compassion, and caring, has made a significant impact in our schools. The training and implementation of Virtues strategies have not only addressed the challenges affecting access to quality education and child protection and care, but have also brought hope, positive changes, and improved well-being to our students and staff members. We express our heartfelt gratitude to the Virtues family and friends for their support as we work towards spreading the of Virtues and changing lives for the better.
