As a local organization serving a small, isolated island community, our programs and initiatives often overlap. Our specific projects fall into either Disaster Preparedness and Response, or Recovery and Mitigation, with activities, trainings, and partnerships to support those efforts.
Availability and access to safe and affordable housing is a critical issue impacting our community. The goal of the Love City Strong Resilient Housing Initiative is to rebuild and repair homes of St. John residents, and also to ensure that structures are sustainable and resilient in the face of future impacts.
Every year before the start of the Atlantic Hurricane season, we evaluate our preparedness and response capacity as an organization, and the general state of our island. A key element of community preparedness is dependable and secure sheltering. Therefore, our Go Team has recently completed an island wide damaged home assessment in order to inform both our ongoing housing program, and assess unmet needs as we prepare for the 2025 season.
The survey was designed to gather information about homes that remain damaged since 2017 (both occupied and unoccupied), concentrations of damaged homes in certain areas, as well as structures in the process of rebuilding. Love City Strong has always emphasized the importance of data driven programs, and this assessment will allow us to better understand the current housing situation, and improve our activities in support of our community.
St. John is accustomed to anxiety regarding the intensity and frequency of storms during every approaching hurricane season. By taking measures to continually build on experience to expand our reach with community preparedness, we hope to enter this upcoming season with a sense of purpose and security. We are grateful for the support of GlobalGiving and our generous donors as we navigate recovery, and build towards broader resilience.
