Project Report | Jan 27, 2021
Keeping our community safer, together.

By Mae Agna | Program Development

At Love City Strong, planning for future challenges presented by natural disasters is our primary goal and purpose as a nonprofit organization.

In support of this mission, when we are not immediately responding to emergency situations (like the COVID-19 pandemic or tropical storms), we work on providing resources to high risk communities on St. John to ensure that they are more prepared for when a disaster strikes. This is done through multiple micro-projects that we work on during different times of the year.

One of our longest running micro-projects focuses on connecting first responders to those in need during a crisis; whether it's a hurricane or a personal health emergency. In 2019, our team started traveling across the island and going door-to-door, offering seniors and persons with a disability or chronic health condition free interventions that may make it easier for emergency workers to find them. Over 3,000 individual interventions have been put out into the St. John community by our team so far.

These interventions include providing residents with custom home address signs when they do not have their address posted; easy to use, waterproof, emergency flashing lights; emergency information magnets from St. John Rescue; and File of Life cards.

File of Life cards are small informational cards where a person can write down all of their emergency contact information, medical history, and medication history so that a first responder has all of the information they need about a person when they arrive on scene to help. These cards are printed in English and in Spanish.

We also collect important data that can be used by first responders to locate high risk residents after a natural disaster. This data helps us make wellness check phone calls before and after low-impact events such as tropical storms, and gives us a starting point for our other preparedness programs. Over 600 St. John households have voluntarily given us their data since we began collecting it. In accordance with current COVID-19 protocols, our team has adjusted our data gathering processes so that we can continue to safely provide this necessary service to the people of St. John. We always wear our masks and gloves, and we never enter anyone’s home.

In addition to helping us pay for a wider distribution of interventions across the island, your donations ensure that we have Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for our staff, so that we can remain healthy and active in the community.

Please consider supporting us today with a one-time or monthly donation. With your help, we can ensure that St. John is more prepared than ever!
