Challenge

Lake Kivu, particularly in the Bukavu area, is experiencing increasing pollution due to uncontrolled waste disposal, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, and low levels of environmental awareness. This situation is degrading water quality, threatening aquatic biodiversity, increasing waterborne diseases, and undermining the livelihoods of lakeside communities. Strengthening community-based waste prevention and management mechanisms is essential to preserve this lake and protect public health.

Solution

The project addresses the causes of pollution in Lake Kivu in Bukavu, including low environmental awareness, poor waste management, and weak community engagement. It will implement awareness campaigns, shoreline clean-up activities, and strengthen local committees. It will also improve waste management practices and coordination with local authorities and civil society to reduce pollution, protect biodiversity, and improve public health.

Long-Term Impact

In the long term, the project will sustainably improve the water quality of Lake Kivu in Bukavu by reducing pollution and promoting community-based waste management practices. Strengthening local committees will ensure the continuity of awareness-raising, clean-up, and monitoring activities. It will also contribute to the preservation of biodiversity, the reduction of waterborne diseases, and the long-term improvement of living conditions and resilience of lakeside communities.
