On March 21, 2022, a tragic misunderstanding during a Kurdish Newroz celebration led de facto authorities to react violently, mistaking the fire-lighting ritual for a satanic act. In early 2023, LACU responded by organizing a community-led theater production-written and performed by members of the affected community-to explain the festival's meaning. Building on its success, we now aim to foster social cohesion through workshops and cultural heritage documentation.
Syria's prolonged conflict has deeply fractured its social fabric, particularly among minority communities. Years of repression, mistrust, and cultural marginalization have left lasting divisions and eroded trust between groups. Without dedicated efforts to rebuild relationships and protect cultural identities, the risk of continued tension, exclusion, and loss of heritage remains alarmingly high.
Building on the success of recent community theater initiatives, LACU is launching a broader program to strengthen social cohesion and preserve cultural identity. The initiative will include interactive workshops that foster collaboration and trust, dialogue sessions that encourage mutual understanding across diverse communities, and documentation of cultural heritage such as proverbs and folk tales.
