The Academy of Sustainable Agriculture and Innovation aims to strengthen Puerto Rico's food system by providing free, practical training to farmers and aspiring agricultural entrepreneurs across the island in all 78 municipalities. Through online courses, in-person workshops, and hands-on demonstrations, the project will equip over 600 participants annually with the skills needed to improve farm productivity, adopt sustainable practices, and increase income.
Puerto Rico faces an aging farmer population, limited access to agricultural training, climate shocks, and high barriers to market entry. The island imports about 85% of its food, making food costs nearly twice as high as in Florida. Many small and beginning farmers lack the technical and business skills needed to farm profitably, weakening rural economies and food security.
This project addresses these challenges by providing free, practical training in sustainable agriculture, farm business skills, and value-added production. Through online courses, hands-on workshops, and on-farm demonstrations, farmers gain the tools to increase productivity, access markets, and adapt to climate risks-strengthening local food production, farmer incomes, and Puerto Rico's food security.
The long-term impact is a resilient rural economy powered by small, diversified farms across Puerto Rico's diverse regions. By building farmer skills and local capacity, the project will increase sustainable food production, strengthen farm incomes, reduce reliance on imports, and ensure an abundance of locally grown, sustainable agricultural products for generations to come.
