The "Strengthening Gardens for Teen Mothers in Kayonza" project seeks to address the pressing issue of food insecurity in our community by establishing sustainable community gardens. These gardens will serve as vital resources for teen mothers and families, providing access to fresh, healthy produce while promoting environmental stewardship, community engagement, and education.
The challenge of food insecurity is multifaceted, and our community faces several pressing issues, including: The prevalence of malnutrition among babies born to teenage mothers in Rwanda represents a significant public health crisis, characterized by an intergenerational cycle of poor growth and socio-economic vulnerability. While Rwanda has reduced national stunting rates to 32.4% as of 2021, infants of adolescent mothers remain at a disproportionately high risk, with 10% born at a low birth.
These gardens will provide fresh food to teen mothers and their babies by improving their nutrition and health situation. The project will help to teaching their farming techniques, agribusiness skills and provide income generating activities for teen mothers.
The project will create income generating activities based on farming for 50 teen mothers living in Kayonza district and allow them to get out of poverty. It will will also provide space for bringing joint solutions for their community issues.
