Summary

One of the current threats to whale sharks is tourism increasing and a lack of conservation awareness of this endangered species. This project aims to improve the development of tourism practices through knowledge strengthening and awareness raising of whale sharks' importance for communities. In this way, we will help whale shark conservation by promoting the development of educational tourism activity and minimizing the impacts on the species to ensure sustainable livelihoods for locals.

Challenge

The fast and continued growth of tourism with whale sharks could increase pressure and impacts on these individuals that arrive in the Mexican Caribbean for feeding. Between 2021 and 2023, we registered a drastic decline in whale sharks' sightings. To maintain the benefits of whale shark presence we need to minimize possible impacts on them during tourism activity, improve how tourism is carried out, and raise communities' awareness about the importance of this endangered species conservation.

Solution

We provide training courses to local tourism operators to enhance their abilities and help them develop responsible tourism with whale sharks. We carry out aerial and marine surveys to ensure rules compliance during tourism activity and to register information about whale sharks' behavior in response to boats and swimmers' presence. We share information with schools, cultural forums, festivals in localities, and the media to promote conservation and sustainable tourism with whale sharks.

Long-Term Impact

Tourism is a helpful tool to raise awareness and promote whale sharks' conservation. But for that, we must ensure that society knows the importance of responsible tourism. Through our Sustainable Whale Shark Management Program, we work with key actors to identify threats and implement actions to protect these giants of the sea. By supporting our cause, you're not just strengthening the culture of respect for whale sharks but ensuring the legacy of these gentle giants for generations to come.
