In the preceding quarter, the Foundation restored hope to vulnerable children through holistic support to their households in the four service domains namely: Healthy, Schooled, Safe, and stable through direct service provision and referrals to other service delivery points.

HEALTHY: This service domain focuses on social behavior change messages which are aimed at the prevention of minor ailments through the promotion of water sanitation and good hygiene practices. Also, in health education, adolescents were provided with menstrual hygiene messages and sanitary towels. HIV prevention messages were given to adolescents from ages 9 to17 years of age, and malnutrition screening for children under the ages of 5, (4 Females and 1 male) one beneficiary who was found to be severely malnourished, was provided with an assisted referral to a nearby primary health center for medical examination and diagnoses as well as treatment of minor illnesses.  Fortified food such as Tom brown was also provided to the child to boost her dietary supply in order to improve the child’s nutritional status. Respectively, 6 (3 males 3 females) children who were also found to be coughing and with massive weight loss were screened for TB and referred to the primary health center for testing for malaria and Tuberculosis. A total of 87 beneficiaries (57 children; 20 males; 37 females; 30 caregivers; 6 males and 24 females) across Calabar Municipality, Calabar South, and Akamkpa Local Government Areas of the State were provided with this service during household visits.

SCHOOLED: In order to contribute to the achievement of the 4th sustainable development goal -Quality education, the foundation increased its educational support from 23 children to cover 50 (21 females 24 Males) children. Calabar South LGA: 11 (5 female and 6 male), Calabar Municipality LGA: 16 children (4 female, 12 Male), Akamkpa LGA: (12 females, 11 Males) These children were provided educational support services such as payment of school fees and levies, and provision of scholastic materials, administered educational performance assessment for 50 (21 female 24 males) children in school and 5 (3 female, 2 males) children on vocational skills acquisition training as well as career counseling. These services were provided to the children and their caregivers through school visits, home visits, and quarterly kids and adolescent club meetings.

SAFE:  In a bid to improve the child protection case management services of the foundation, 2 staff of the foundation attended a refresher training by cross River State Child Protection Network with support from UNICEF. The foundation also took part in the management of a sexual abuse case on a child in Akamkpa LGA, as identified and reported by a community volunteer. The child was referred to the health facility for treatment and provision of prophylaxis, while the child is under management and treatment by other CSO partners, the police is making all efforts to apprehend the absconded perpetrator.

STABLE: In this domain, the Foundation continued its support for caregivers (30; 6 males and 24 females) and adolescents (40; 12 males and 28 females) in financial education.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION: Monitoring and evaluation visits were carried out during the reporting quarter to determine the program's progress on beneficiaries and identify challenges that may be responsible for stalling progress and resources required to address program issues.  Monitoring tools were used during home and school visits and were utterly, correctly documented, and filed in the beneficiaries’ folder.

NEXT STEPS: in the next quarter, The Foundation plans to engage caregivers in intense entrepreneurship ventures as this could not be achieved due to limited funds. We intend to involve adolescents in the making of liquid soap. This is based on the Foundation’s aim of increasing household income and tackling period poverty among its adolescent girls. We continue to appreciate your continuous support to vulnerable households in Calabar. With your support, we will continue to strive to restore hope to the more vulnerable.

Thank you.
