Second Quarter Report July 2021

PROJECT REPORT STRENGTHEN 100 VULNERABLE HOUSEHOLDS IN CALABAR In line with the current revised national standard of service for vulnerable children in Nigeria which has reduced the service areas from 6+1 domains to four domains, Charles Edet Effiong Foundation provided services in the four service domains which include stable, safe, schooled, and healthy. In this second quarter of the year 2021, the Foundation has provided a plethora of services to improve the capability of caregivers to meet the basic needs of children under their care- through the following service domains. 1. HEALTHY • Nutrition Assessment and Counselling Support (NACs): As part of our routine assessment, all children on our program have been reached with Nutrition Assessment and Counselling support. The objective of the activity was to screen for severe Acute Malnutrition amongst our children and provide adequate interventions. At the end of the activity, none was found, caregivers were counseled on the use of locally available resources to make nutritious food for children to ensure their children were provided with the required dietary requirements to stay healthy. WASH /Health Education: Caregivers were also provided with information on Water Hygiene and sanitation to help them to know the need to develop and maintain a habit of handwashing, the use of clean drinking water for them and their children as well as a clean environment for the general wellbeing of their households. 2. SCHOOLED • Payment of school fees and provision of scholastic materials: The desire of the Foundation to ensure every child learns and is given the atmosphere to develop and attain their full developmental milestones as other children of their ages. Children on our program were supported with school fees and scholastic materials to enable them to participate fully in school and classwork for academic excellence. • School visit/ Educational and Academic performance assessment: In furtherance of the desire to ensure children do well in their academic pursuit, it was necessary to embark on a routine school visit to our children in school to improve the bond between them and the foundation, get their feedback on the project, this also served as a means to know the welfare of the children in school. Educational and Academic performance assessment was carried out with the aim of ensuring that children are attending school regularly, academic performance assessment was also done, to evaluate each child’s academic performance. Issues bordering around subject combination and career choices for children in senior classes were discussed with the children and their class teachers, and proper counseling on the issues identified was provided to the children 3. SAFE • Caregivers Forum And Kids ‘club Meeting: The foundation used the Caregivers’ forum, and kids/ adolescent clubs as platforms to determinate information on birth registration awareness on the need for every child to have a legal identity, and the importance of parental involvement in children’s education, information on gender norms and gender-based violence was also shared during the fora. Caregivers and children gained knowledge on where to report whenever they were abused, violated and how to carry out whistleblowing in the case where any member of their community was being violated 4. STABLE • Financial Education: Our caregivers who are engaged in petty trading, were provided with financial education, money management, and bookkeeping to enable them to manage their incomes and expenditure, prioritized their expenditure, and increasing their savings. • Market Assessment: As mentioned in our last quarter's next step, the foundation carried out a market analysis to see the kinds of income-generating activities, and trades that were predominant in the part of Calabar where our beneficiaries reside. This process is ongoing and shall be completed in the next quarter. Monitoring and Evaluation: As is the policy in Charles Edet Effiong Foundation and in line with the national protocol of service provision to beneficiaries, services provided were updated on each household and beneficiary’s folders. Data quality assessment was run on the database to track data entry gaps, and corrections were effected and documented. OUR NEXT STEPS In the third quarter of the year 2021, we plan to complete our market assessment of the area as well as map, network and collaborate with other organizations to provide skills acquisition to beneficiaries of our program. Depending on the funds we can raise, we hope to also provide low startup capital to caregivers on our project for microbusiness startups for the sustainability of the project. We appreciate our partners who continue to play an important role in improving the lives of vulnerable households in Calabar. Your kind support means a lot to our team and the children we support. As we all navigate our way out of the current global crisis, we appreciate your kind and continuous support towards strengthening the livelihoods of the vulnerable households who have been impacted disproportionately economically by the global pandemic.
