Facing psychological crisis

By Anna Jafernik | Program Leader

Dear Donors,

Thanks to Your support, our program  has been able to operate throughout the year, providing assistance to many in need. We are pleased to inform you that recently we have been able to help over 40 children in psychological crisis who benefited from the support of psychologists and therapists.

Since the beginning of the year, we have conducted over 300 individual psychological consultations. However, this is only a drop in the ocean of needs. Our intervention visits have repeatedly saved the lives of young people, including those struggling with suicidal thoughts or self-harm. Often, we receive young individuals with severe anxiety, school phobias, or untreated depression. Most commonly, they come with feelings of loneliness and misunderstanding.

Over the past year, we have received many calls from desperate parents who felt helpless and feared for their children's lives. In response to these needs, we have launched a support group for youth, helping them develop social skills, which is particularly important in the age of digitalization and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unfortunately, we are the only institution in the region offering free and immediate psychological intervention. Many families are still unable to cover therapy costs, and the phone does not stop ringing. We are concerned about the future of our activities because, starting next year, we do not have secured funding, yet we know we can save the health and lives of many young people in the Zywiec district.

In June, we held a Round Table with youth on mental health. We are proud that so many young people felt comfortable speaking openly with us. Unfortunately, the findings from this meeting were dramatic—mental health remains a taboo topic in our region, and the emotional problems of young people are often dismissed. Youth reported that every second young person in their surroundings struggles with mental health issues, and that outside our foundation, they have nowhere to seek help.

Our streetworkers are continuously active in the field, conducting open playground activities for all children. We regularly visit children from families facing educational and financial difficulties. Thanks to the sense of safety they provide, young people are increasingly willing to step outside their neighborhoods.

Through our ongoing activities, we have gained the trust of not only the children but also their families, which is a significant achievement. Through shared play and activities, we are building relationships and trust, which is invaluable in today’s world. This would not be possible without you, our dear donors. It is thanks to your support that we can carry out these important activities.

We hope to continue our mission together, providing help to those who need it most.

With gratitude,  all our Team
