The Story Bridges project provides diverse books and establishes trauma-informed reading clubs for vulnerable children across an orphanage, an IDP camp, and an under-resourced community school in Nigeria. By creating these supportive anchor communities, Tales & Treasures Literacy Initiative will foster emotional resilience, improve foundational literacy skills, and provide safe spaces for 500 children to learn and heal through the power of storytelling.
Thousands of Nigerian children face severe educational disruptions due to poverty, displacement, and lack of resources. Specifically, children living in internally displaced persons camps, orphanages, and attending under-resourced community schools often lack access to quality reading materials and safe learning environments. They struggle to develop basic literacy skills crucial for their future academic success and emotional resilience, trapping them in a cycle of limited opportunity.
The Story Bridges project will tackle this by establishing robust "anchor communities" for literacy: one in an IDP camp, one in an orphanage, and one in a local community school. We will distribute culturally relevant books, create welcoming reading corners, and train local volunteers to lead trauma-informed reading clubs. This targeted approach ensures that children in these varying environments receive the specific educational and emotional support they need.
This project will directly impact 500 vulnerable children, providing them with the literacy tools necessary to improve their academic trajectories. This improved literacy will empower these children to break the cycle of poverty, pursue higher education, and build emotional resilience that will benefit them and their communities for years to come.
