Ba Futuru is working to stop the use of violence against children in the classroom in Timor-Leste! Help to support positive learning environments for children in one of the world's newest countries. Every little bit makes a big difference!
Despite the "Zero Tolerance" policy on violence against students in the classroom declared by the Minister of Education in 2008, students in classrooms across Timor-Leste continue to experience slapping, hitting and beating with sticks as discipline methods. This physical punishment has lasting negative consequences on the well-being of children.
This project will train teachers and teacher trainers on Child Protection and Positive Discipline principles, strategies and techniques. This training will equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to be able to better protect their students from abuse and neglect, and assist those who are victims of maltreatment. Simultaneously, it will equip them with the skills to diminish the use of corporal punishment in the classroom, thereby providing safer and more productive learning environment.
More than one hundred teachers will be directly trained per year, and teacher trainers from each of Timor-Leste's 13 districts will be trained to use the training materials to train additional teachers in all districts, which means over time violence against children will be eradicated in schools across Timor-Leste impacting hundreds of thousands of children.
