In Yemen, rabies is a silent killer threatening thousands of families. This project implements the One Health approach to eliminate human rabies deaths by providing life-saving Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) and training 500 health workers. Starting with our pilot in Taiz, we aim to ensure no child or parent loses their life to this preventable disease, aligning with the global Zero by 30 goal.
Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease that poses a "silent threat" in Yemen due to fragile health infrastructure and the absence of stray animal management systems. The core problems identified in the project include: High Fatality Rates: Without immediate treatment, rabies is nearly 100% fatal, yet many communities lack the resources to prevent it. Lack of Medical Supplies: There is a severe shortage of life-saving vaccines and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in local health facilities.
This project solves the crisis through a One Health approach across three tracks: Animal Prevention: Vaccinating stray dogs to break the transmission cycle at its source and managing populations humanely. Medical Response: Providing free, life-saving PEP vaccines and strengthening cold chain systems to ensure efficacy in challenging environments. Capacity Building: Training 500 health workers and educating schools/communities on prevention and first aid. The goal is Zero Deaths by 2030, ensu
The project aims for "Zero by 30" by eliminating rabies deaths in Yemen. We build resilient health systems by training 500 professionals and securing vaccine cold chains. By implementing humane animal management, we create safer environments for children and families. This initiative serves as a scalable model, transitioning from Taiz to a national standard. Ultimately, it ensures permanent community protection and sustainable health security through local institutional ownership.
