This project will build a Suicide Prevention course specifically for parents with LGBTQ children to help them understand how to recognize the signs of suicide and how to seek support for their children. Mama Dragons will build the course and train 3,000 parents in suicide prevention in the next two years at a cost of $40,000.
According to the Trevor Project national survey, 42% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, including more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth (2021). As of today, no online LGBTQ parenting curriculum is available that is directed at the greater skills and resources needed for parents to support children struggling with suicidal risk factors, suicidal ideation, self harm, and suicidal behaviors.
This course will increase the availability and access to suicide prevention for mothers of LGBTQ children. Through this course parents will take the steps necessary to reduce LGBTQ children's access to lethal means. Parents will learn to support their children, and teach them coping and problem-solving skills.
More parents will have the skills to recognize signs of suicide and the knowledge of how to get their children lifesaving help.
