200 Menstrual Kits for Girls with Disability.

Summary

On International Menstrual Hygiene Day 28th May 2023, the project shall provide 200 menstrual kits (1 pack of reusable sanitary pads, 1 washing bucket, 2 underwears and 1kg of laundry soap) to 200 girls living with disability from 2 Special Needs Schools in rural areas of Masindi enabling them menstruate hygienically and increase class attendance. The project shall educate girls and caretakers/guardians on menstrual management, raise awareness on menstrual stigma and improve sanitary facilties.

Challenge

80% of rural adolescent girls with disabilties face triple disadvantages while in periods and double stigma while menstruating. Girls with disability have been excluded from efforts to achieve menstrual health and miss 60% of school days while menstruating due to lack of menstrual products. With report by Medical Research Centre Uganda, 7/10 girls in rural areas stay at home during school days while menstruating due to fear of blood leakage, bullying from boys and lack of privacy in changing pad

Solution

During menstrual hygiene campaign to recognize International Menstrual Hygiene Day 2023, the project will raise community awareness on challenges girls with disabilities face during menstruation and their impact of their health and education, shall educate girls and caretakers/guardians on menstrual hygiene and management. The project shall raise funds and donate 200 menstrual hygiene kits to 200 girls living with disability to support them menstruate hygienically and with dignity.

Long-Term Impact

Collective efforts by stakeholders to support girls in addressing challenges they face during menstruation. Girls with disabilities are included in programs that promote menstrual health. Increased school attendance of girls with disabilties during menstruation. Reduced stigma and descrimination of menstruating girls. Improved sanitary facilities at schools.
