Aberuchan is an 11 year old girl who was brought from Masindi to Kampala by a one Joyce in August 2016 to work as a domestic work particularly to baby sit a one year old baby in Kisenyi 11 zone in Kamwokya 11 parish. In Masindi, Aberuchan was staying with her poor parents who were struggling to pay her school fees at Kigomba Primary School. A one Torach a neighbor in Aberuchan’s village took advantage of the parent’s poor situation to connect Aberuchan to Joyce to work for her as a baby sitter in Kampala. Aberuchan’s mother was hesitant to hand her over to Joyce but she was coerced to consent on promises that she would be educated while in Kampala. She was thus brought to Kampala and subjected to babysitting besides doing other domestic chores like cooking, fetching water, washing the baby’s clothes and mopping the house. She was also being subjected to heavy work such as carrying a 20 litre jerican of water on her head with a baby on her back.
PLA’s interventions in Aberuchan’s case resulted into her withdrawal from child labour and her resettlement back to her village in Masindi District in Bokwe Sub County in Kigunya village. PLA also recovered 155,000/= as Aberuchan’s compensation for doing domestic work. This was used to enroll Aberuchan in school in primary two at Bokwe Primary School and to also purchase scholastic materials such as uniforms, books and pencils
