“PLA VOCATIONAL TRAINING EMPOWERS BENEFICIARY TO START UP A SALOON”
Orishaba, a 22 year old female from Nansana Ganda was studying secretarial studies at Somero Uganda before enrolling at Nile Vocational Institute in Jinja in 2017 where she studied hairdressing for a period of six months. During this period she was trained in hair braiding, weaving, styling. After the six month course, she was trained in financial literacy and entrepreneurship at Kyebando Vocational Training Institute. At the time of her graduation, she was able to plait a number of hairstyles including pencil, weaves and dreadlocks. After graduation, she was placed for internship at Sustainable Youth Development Mpelerwe for a period of 3 months with the help of Platform for Labour Action. During this period, she was able to perfect her skills in plaiting and hair styling. At the end of the internship period, she was retained and trained students in hair dressing at a monthly salary of 100,000 shillings. In March 2018, Orishaba partnered with her friend and started up Alpha and Omega Beauty Saloon in Ganda Nansana which offers a range of hair dressing services. She is able to save up 10,000 shillings every day. She is able to pay rent, buy basic needs and look after her child. She is very grateful to PLA for giving her the opportunity to gain a skill that she has been able to use to uplift her standard of living.
