Work Continue in Full Swing

Project Update

Our Sterilization & Vaccination of Stray Dogs in India project is currently underway in full swing in Pune City, Maharashtra, one of India's rapidly growing urban centres.

Pune has an estimated stray and community dog population of approximately 300,000 dogs. Managing such a large population humanely and sustainably requires a long-term, consistent, and scientifically managed sterilization and vaccination programme.

Through the continued support of our donors and GlobalGiving supporters, Karma Foundation is actively working to address this challenge.

Our Current Impact

At present, our team is sterilizing and vaccinating approximately 200 dogs every month.

Every dog that comes through our programme receives the necessary medical care associated with sterilization, vaccination, recovery, and release back into its community.

Our approach is designed not only to control population growth but also to improve the health and welfare of community dogs and reduce the risk of the spread of rabies, a fatal but preventable disease.

We are committed to ensuring that every animal is treated with compassion and receives appropriate post-operative care before being returned to its original location.

The Need Is Enormous

With an estimated population of nearly 300,000 community dogs in Pune, the scale of the challenge is immense.

Sterilizing 200 dogs a month is an important contribution, but it represents only a small fraction of the total population. Population management requires sustained efforts over several years, with sterilization and vaccination carried out continuously and at significant scale.

The encouraging news is that we have the infrastructure, team, and operational capacity to significantly increase our monthly output.

With adequate funding, we can approximately double our current capacity, allowing us to sterilize and vaccinate around 400 dogs every month.

This would mean hundreds more dogs receiving life-saving vaccinations and sterilization every month, while making a significantly greater contribution towards humane population management in Pune.

Why Continued Support Matters

Our work is only possible because of the generosity of people who believe that stray and community animals deserve humane and compassionate care.

The cost of each sterilization and vaccination includes much more than the surgery itself. It supports the entire process — from humane capture and transportation to veterinary examination, surgery, anesthesia, medication, vaccination, post-operative monitoring, recovery, and finally the safe return of the animal to its community.

Continued funding allows us to keep this programme running consistently and gives us the opportunity to expand its reach.

Without sustained support, our ability to maintain and increase the number of animals treated each month is severely limited.

Looking Ahead

Our immediate goal is to continue our current pace of approximately 200 dogs per month while working towards doubling our capacity as additional funds become available.

Our long-term vision is to contribute meaningfully towards a healthier, more stable, and humanely managed community dog population in Pune.

Every dog sterilized represents one step towards reducing future unwanted births.

Every dog vaccinated represents one more animal protected from a deadly disease.

And every animal treated is one more life that has received a chance to live healthier and safer in its community.

Please Continue Your Support

We are deeply grateful to GlobalGiving and every donor who has supported this project.

Your support is making this work possible and helping us reach animals who would otherwise have little or no access to veterinary care.

Please continue supporting our Sterilization & Vaccination project.

With your continued support — and with additional funding — we can increase our capacity, reach more dogs, perform more sterilizations, administer more vaccinations, and make a much greater impact across Pune.

Together, we can build a future where community dogs are healthier, populations are managed humanely, and fewer animals are born into lives of suffering.

Thank you for standing with us and for helping us continue this important work.
