STEM Education in Africa: Changing the Equation

by iNERDE Inc. Vetted since 2014

We believe that the entire world will benefit when young people in all countries have the opportunity to pursue and realize their dreams. Today, opportunity is linked to competence in science and technologies and the culture of innovation. iNERDE teaches STEM and innovation skills to African youth. We aim to create leaders with the knowledge and confidence to bring their nations to the world table as equal partners.

Prosperity in the modern world comes from knowledge, problem-solving skills, and mastery of the development and use of technology. Most African nations lag far behind the rest of the world and cannot create opportunity. Africa may need water wells, but it needs native water resource engineers 1000 times more. Proven educational methods that foster innovation and technical confidence need to blossom in African countries which will provide 33% of the global workforce by 2050.

Currently operating in Mali and Senegal with 8 partner schools, iNERDE runs 5-week STEM summer camps and a 2-week programming bootcamp which bring hands-on, project-based, community-oriented interactive learning adapted from proven US programs. Wildly successful, with demand far outstripping our resources, we address a huge gap in African education. We teach kids, creating future leaders, but we also work with partner schools and their teachers to ensure our work has far-reaching impact.

Long-Term Impact

This year iNERDE will have introduced hundreds of kids and tens of educators to a new-for Africa-system of hands-on learning for innovation. Our biggest fault, our schools and parents tell us, is that we can't offer more. 1000 people with a different vision of the world and the confidence to solve problems in their environment, can change the destiny of a nation. Impact Goal: more kids, more countries, more partnerships with a reproducible program. Objective: Africa, a continent of opportunity.
